Where is Gulmarg?
Gulmarg is a scenic mountain town and premier ski destination located in the Pir Panjal Range of the western Himalayas, in the northern Indian union territory of Jammu and Kashmir. Situated at an elevation of about 8,690 feet (2,650 meters), it's 34 miles (55 kilometers) west of Srinagar, the region's largest city and summer capital.
World-Class Terrain and Truly Endless Powder
The skiing here is 95% backcountry, with a massive vertical drop of 4,000 feet and legendary runs like Shark’s Fin and Mary’s Shoulder. And thanks to over 14 meters of annual snowfall, Gulmarg delivers consistently deep powder. In fact, Skiing Magazine called Gulmarg one of the top 10 snowiest resorts in the world.
The Kashmiri Experience
In Gulmarg, you can take a 7 mile off-piste run into the village of Drung where the local children love nothing more than to take them on a ride through their village on the back of your skis. Or spend the afternoon with us exploring the streets of Old Srinagar. You’ll also stay on traditional houseboats on Dal Lake and don’t miss the chance to visit the Floating Vegetable Markets or enjoy a cup of saffron tea—it’s as much a part of the adventure as the skiing.
Dust Off Your Backcountry Skills
We provide comprehensive avalanche safety training integrated into your adventure so you can soak up all the backcountry has to offer safely. Our experienced ski instructors—one from The Adventure Project and one local Kashmiri guide—will work with your small group to provide you with hands-on experience in reading snow conditions, using safety gear, and making smart decisions in the backcountry. Whether it’s your first time touring or looking to sharpen your skills, you'll leave with more confidence and knowledge for future adventures.
Who is This Trip Suitable For?
This trip is suitable for advanced and Expert Skiers and snowboarders.
Advanced
If you are comfortable skiing or riding on groomed black runs and have some experience in shallow powder and trees, we can help you take your skills to the next level in this program. There's plenty of powder in the alpine zone or in the trees that we can take you to or if you are ready to do some touring with the right equipment and training we can take you into the side country or backcountry. We can introduce you to touring and train you in avalanche safety skills. We can also help fine tune your technique to make you an efficient skier or boarder in powder.
Expert
If you can ski or ride the whole mountain including double diamond terrain, tight trees, and deep powder, then Gulmarg will be a powder paradise for you. We will guide you to as much deep or untouched snow that you can handle and that could be from the gondola, the chairlift or touring. If you are ready to do some skinning for your turns, then there are a lot of options. Full avalanche safety training will also be provided.
